In the United States, gleaning programs are run by both religious groups and secular organizations. The largest gleaning organization is probably Society of St. Andrew, a Christian nonprofit that operates in 30 states. Since 1986, it has gleaned more than 133 million pounds of food (the equivalent of more than 1 billion servings), which it has distributed to food pantries, soup kitchens, and other hunger relief organizations.
Another organization called Food Rescue US works with grocery stores and other food businesses to collect surplus food that would otherwise be thrown away and delivers it to soup kitchens and food pantries. According to its website, Food Rescue US has rescued more than 25 million pounds of food since its founding in 2013.
